Lea Privacy Policy
Effective date: 5 November 2026.
Lea is a reading companion for iPhone and iPad developed by Peter Steffensen. Lea does not require an account and does not include advertising, cross-app tracking, or third-party analytics SDKs.
Your library stays on your device
Lea stores your reader name, goals, book details, notes, ratings and reading history locally in the app's protected storage. Lea does not send this library or reading history to a Lea server. Lea does not provide automatic cloud sync or automatic cloud backup of its private library directory.
You can export a Lea backup through the system share sheet and restore it later. You control where you send that file. A backup may contain your reader name, library, notes, reading history and reminder preferences, so share it only with people and services you choose. Exported copies are governed by the storage service or recipient you select.
Book searches and covers
When you search for a book, Lea sends your search text to Open Library, operated by the Internet Archive, to retrieve matching book details. When Lea loads a cover image, it requests the relevant image from Open Library's cover service. These requests expose ordinary network information, such as your IP address, to the destination service. Do not put private information in a book search.
Open Library's handling of these requests is governed by the Internet Archive policy: https://archive.org/about/terms. That policy describes standard web logs that may include IP addresses, requested URLs and request times. A search URL includes the query you choose to send. Lea does not send your notes or reading-session history with these requests. You can add books manually without using online lookup.
If you enter a custom cover image URL, Lea requests that image from the provider you choose. That provider receives your IP address and the requested image URL and may keep its own request logs. Avoid image URLs containing private credentials or information.
Cover scanning and photos
If you choose Scan a cover, Lea uses Apple's camera or photo picker and recognizes title/author text on your device. Lea does not upload the selected photo or save a copy in its library. The photo is held in memory for the lookup workflow. You review and can edit the recognized text before sending a search to Open Library. Lea requests camera access only when you use camera capture; you can change permission in iOS Settings.
Screen Time and distraction blocking
If you enable Pro distraction blocking, Lea requests individual Screen Time authorization through Apple's Family Controls framework. Reading-app exceptions are represented by Apple's opaque application tokens. Lea stores the relevant tokens and session-protection scheduling information in a shared on-device app group used by Lea and its monitoring extension. Lea does not upload a list of your apps or Screen Time activity to a Lea server. You can revoke authorization in iOS Settings.
Lea cannot automatically turn Apple's Focus mode on or off. Any Focus settings or caller allowances are controlled by you and iOS.
Optional reading reminders
Scheduled reading reminders use Apple's on-device notification system. Lea stores your chosen schedule and preferences locally and requests notification permission when you enable reminders. You can turn them off in Lea or change notification permission in iOS Settings.
Optional social-app reminders require Screen Time authorization and your selection of individual apps. Apple's opaque application tokens, reminder settings and monitoring state stay in a shared on-device app group for Lea and its monitoring extension. Lea does not send your selected app list or Screen Time activity to a Lea server. Resetting Lea clears its selections and reminders; restoring a library keeps reminders disabled until you enable them again on that device. Exported backups may contain reminder preferences but do not include the separately stored app-selection tokens.
Purchases
Apple processes the optional one-time Lea Pro purchase through the App Store. Lea uses StoreKit to verify whether your Apple Account is entitled to Pro and to restore purchases. Lea does not receive your payment-card details. Purchase transactions and refunds are handled under Apple's policies. A verified purchase can be available offline on a device; restoring on a new installation may require a connection and the Apple Account used to buy it.
Lea backups cannot grant purchase ownership. Removing or resetting a local library does not cancel or refund an App Store purchase.
Retention and deletion
Your library remains on your device until you remove its records, reset the library in Lea's Settings or uninstall the app. Resetting the library removes the app's local reading records; it does not remove exported backups or files held by recipients you selected. Apple may retain purchase records independently. Open Library handles its service requests under its own policies.
If a saved library cannot be opened, Lea preserves the file for recovery rather than silently discarding it. Export it before resetting if you need to retain a copy.
Children and privacy
Lea does not require a birth date or account and does not operate a social profile, messaging system or advertising service. Families should use Apple's device and purchase controls as appropriate. Lea is not a parental monitoring service.
